Alternatives to cisapride (Prepulsid)

Cisapride was a drug that was used to treat several types of stomach problem. It will not be used so much in future because of safety concerns. In some patients cisapride can cause an abnormal heart rate; this can be fatal.

In Australia the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme has restricted cisapride to only one condition (when the stomach fails to contract and empty). Cisapride can only be prescribed after the patient has seen a specialist.

Most people taking cisapride for other conditions will have to stop. These conditions will usually respond to a different medicine.

If you continue to take cisapride avoid grapefruit juice as it can increase side effects.
