Fertility testing

Couples who have been unable to have a baby after a year of trying may have a fertility problem. This problem is common, but a cause is not always found. In a third of cases the cause is as likely to be in the man as in the woman and sometimes in both.

Both partners should talk to their general practitioner if they are concerned about their fertility. After an examination the doctor can arrange some simple tests such as a sperm count. If these tests do not find a cause specialist advice may be needed, but many couples do eventually conceive a child without special intervention.
