Acne

Acne is a common condition. Some people develop a severe form of acne which can cause cysts and scars.

If treatment is needed for severe acne, a medicine called isotretinoin may be recommended. Isotretinoin capsules can only be prescribed by skin specialists (dermatologists).

While isotretinoin helps many patients it has serious side effects. It is important to follow the dermatologist's advice about how to reduce the risk of these side effects. This includes having regular blood tests to check for liver damage. Although there is much concern about depression and suicide, there is currently no scientific evidence to support an association with isotretinoin.

A particular problem with isotretinoin is birth defects. Women must not become pregnant while taking isotretinoin or for a month after stopping treatment.
