HIV treatments and highly active antiretroviral therapy

There is now a variety of medicines to treat HIV, the virus which causes AIDS. These medicines are often used in combination with each other. Patients may have to take many tablets several times a day.

The new medicines do not cure AIDS, but they can help patients to survive for longer. However, the combination of medicines can cause unpleasant side effects.

The best combination of medicines is unknown, so different people will be taking different treatment.
