Australian Prescriber Vol. 26 No. 6 2003

Good nutrition for good surgery

Although many Australians are overweight, some are undernourished. Not eating a good diet can be bad for you, particularly if you need surgery.

Having an operation puts a lot of demand on patients' bodies. They need to be well nourished if they are going to make a good recovery. The healing process needs energy, but patients may not be able to eat after the operation. The patients may therefore need to take supplements or be fed through a tube or an intravenous drip.
