Australian Prescriber Vol. 29 No. 4 2006

Dry mouth

Dry mouth is a common side effect of many medications but varies in severity. It also occurs in some diseases and after radiation treatment of head and neck cancers.

If the mouth is dry, there is not enough saliva. The symptom can be relieved by chewing sugar-free gum or using artificial saliva. Sometimes a change of medication is needed.

Having a dry mouth can cause cracked lips and dental problems. Patients therefore need regular check-ups by their dentist.
