Drugs in sport - update 2004

Using drugs to enhance sporting performance is cheating and might harm the health of athletes. The World Anti-Doping Agency has made a list of substances which are banned in sports. Allowances are made for athletes who need treatment with a banned substance, but penalties apply if their sporting organisation is not told. Athletes are responsible for making sure any medicines they take are not on the banned list. Except in emergencies, athletes should check if they need an exemption, from the Australian Sports Drug Medical Advisory Committee, before using any medicine. Testing for drugs is not limited to elite athletes.
